In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday nearest to the Harvest Moon. This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox and falls in either September or October each year. The celebrations on this day traditionally include decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food.

Today the children and staff filled St John the Baptist Church to celebrate another Harvest time with readings, prayers and plenty of singing. For the past few years we have asked for donations from parents and staff for the Lincoln Community Larder. Instead of the traditional fresh fruit and vegetables, our office has been filled with bags of tinned and packet produce which this fantastic charity uses to help many families across the city.

What is the Lincoln Community Larder?

The Lincoln Community Larder is a registered charity which has been set up to directly help the lives of people in crisis and…

“…relieve poverty in the Lincoln area through the provision of basic nutritious food and other basic amenities to those in need of short term help. We also support those suffering from illness or special needs.

We issue Larder Vouchers to a variety of agencies in the area who then refer people to us in need of assistance and we give 3 days’ worth of food for each person included on the voucher.”

Every year we are always amazed at the generosity of donations and this year has been no exception! A tiny selection of food was taken to the Church as part of the service but all the food will be collected by the Lincoln Community Larder and be put to good use in the next couple of days.
